For Such A Time As This

Osama bin Laden is dead. There have been some very varied responses all over different spectrums on today’s momentously historic occasion. Honestly, my initial response was disbelief until the President’s speech. Followed was a sense of relief. Upon further thought, I sense that there may be a level of desperation within certain terrorist group who received direction from bin Laden to keep their organization together. As Americans, we should be braced for a backlash. Luck favors the prepared.

Upon even further consideration, what is the appropriate response when informed by the Bible and Christ? Cue a Bible search. Check out these verses [and others] and let me know how you think Jesus would respond? Let us search together.

“And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.” [Colossians 3:15]

“Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.” [Romans 12:17-18]

“And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness. “[James 3:18]

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” [Galatians 5:22-25]

“Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” [Ephesians 6:13-18]

“Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.” [1Peter 3:11-12]

“Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.” [Hebrews 12:14]

“May God give you more and more mercy, peace, and love.” [Jude 1:2]
